The world is a dark place, isn’t it? Famine, disease, natural disaster – there’s just a plethora of things that could either end lives in a heartbeat or erode it slowly out of existence.
One horror that the world is currently facing, and has faced it since God knows how long, is terrorism.
With all the effort to curb this problem you’d think that the world has already rid of it. March and protests, guns and soldiers, drones and missiles – nothing is working. Why is that?
That’s because the world is answering terrorism with violence.
“Victory attained by violence is tantamount to a defeat for it is momentary” – Matahatma Gandhi
When people are asked about terrorism most would answer that it’s caused by religion, ignorance, lack of education, or insanity. All of these are false. Terrorism is an idea; an idea that injustice is being done to a certain group of people. Terrorist group then uses this idea to manipulate people into joining their cause, convincing them that violence is the only way in order for their plea to be heard.
This is why guns and drones couldn’t quell this problem. It breeds more of it, if anything. The more Group A attacks, the stronger Group B’s feelings of oppression become pushing them in an even violent course. And on it goes.
The Weapon of Choice
The answer to terrorism remains elusive. However, there is a fearsome weapon that can actually lessen the power of it. Ridicule.
Take a look back at January 7, 2015 when Charlie Hebdo and 11 others were killed at the hands of Islamic extremist due to the cartoon depictions of the Muslim prophet Muhammad. Terrorist fears mockery for this chaps at their power, blunt the edges of their misguided cause.
Ridicule lessens the weight of fear that people feels regarding religion and individuals who are in power. Even Hitler was openly mocked during World War I by Charlie Chaplin and the Three Stooges which aid in boosting morale of the Allied Forces.
In fact, ridicule is so effective that even the Middle East is using it against terrorist groups like Al Qaeda and the Islamic State. They do so by creating comedic Youtube content and sharing them online.
Iraq also picked up this weapon and started squeezing the trigger. The bullet is called State of Myths, a new Iraqi comedy that geared to counter propaganda the Islamic State.
With these all being said, I leave you with another quote.
Will a day come when the race will detect the funniness of these juvenilities and laugh at them – and by laughing at them destroy them? For your race, in its poverty, has unquestionably one really effective weapon – laughter. Power, Money, Persusasion, Supplication, Persecution – these can lift at a colossal humbug, – push it a little – crowd it a little, weaken it a little, century by century: but only laughter can blow it to rags and atoms at a blast. Against the assault of laughter nothing can stand.
